West Slope
Mental Health Stabilization Center

Overview

Objectives & Goals
The overall objective of the hospital is to provide quality inpatient services for children, adolescents and adults in need of crisis stabilization and to deliver bio-psychosocial services that are comprehensive, accessible and cost effective for patients who qualify. We believe each person’s individual needs must be identified and treated in order to facilitate attainment of his/her optimal level of functioning and health.

Our goal is to ensure a safe and secure, therapeutic environment where rapid stabilization can be achieved with
the help of the compassionate, highly skilled and respectful professional team. Once stabilization has occurred, clients
may work toward their maximum health potential.

Treatment Programming
The programs at the Colorado West Psychiatric Hospital offer intense treatment modalities based on the bio-psychosocial model, which includes medication management, medication education, individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, psychosocial rehabilitation education, chemical dependency education and case management services.

The program primarily utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with a strong focus on family involvement and re-integration into the community with appropriate support and post-discharge services. Individuals participate in the various groups based on their diagnosis, level of functioning and specific treatment needs, as identified in their treatment plan. Staff members are trained in cultural competency issues and services are available without discrimination.

Family Participation
Families and significant others are encouraged to participate in the treatment process. For children and adolescents, this is essential. Every effort is made to help the client’s human support system members to understand the illness from a multidimensional perspective. We believe this understanding promotes healing and stability.

A weekly family group meeting provides education and support opportunities for family members during the hospitalization period. Social workers, therapists and/or nurses conduct the groups and can assist the patient and their support system with work on family dynamics, social and pharmacological issues and post-discharge planning.

Discharge Planning
This process is begun at admission and involves the patient’s family and significant others in addition to linking to outpatient care once they leave the hospital. With the use of tele-psychiatry, arrangements can be made for follow-up services even in remote areas, which facilitate the patient’s successful return to their community. Tele-psychiatry also allows physicians and family members from outlying areas to be involved in the treatment process during hospitalization.

Child and Adolescent Treatment Unit
The Child & Adolescent Unit is a 16-bed program that serves
children and teens ages 4-17 who are experiencing a mental health crisis. We accept referrals from families, therapists, doctors, social services caseworkers, and community members. We treat a wide variety of mental health issues and are able to accommodate both voluntary and involuntary admissions.

Our comprehensive mental health treatment and crisis stabilization program is provided by a multi-disciplinary team that includes mental health specialists, program and team Leaders, case managers, a licensed professional counselor, nurses, and a board certified child & adolescent psychiatrist. Each youth is assigned a case manager who coordinates their treatment services with the family and other care providers, including councilors, medical providers and schools. The case manager also meets with each youth individually as well as facilitating family meetings that are an important component of the healing process.

We provide 24-hour awake supervision of youth, and they participate daily in a highly structured, therapeutic program. Goals are individualized for each resident and may include: anger management, coping skills, diagnostic assessment and medication assessment.

Educational, recreational, social, and skill building instruction is provided to all residents in this therapeutic setting. Family participation is strongly encouraged.

Criteria for Admission

• Intoxication from other licit or illicit substances that        require detoxification
